
Projection screen surfaces are optical materials, not ordinary walls or household textiles. Aggressive rubbing, unknown cleaners, excessive moisture or pressure can change the finish and leave a more visible mark than the original dust.
Always follow the instructions for the exact screen material. When those instructions are unavailable, use the lowest-risk inspection process and ask the supplier before applying any liquid.
Record the screen model, surface name and construction. Determine whether it is matte white, grey, directional ALR/CLR, acoustic woven or perforated, rear projection, coated vinyl, fabric, fixed frame or retractable.
Different surfaces can react differently to water, solvents, pressure and brushing. Do not transfer a cleaning method from a standard matte surface to an ALR or acoustic material without confirmation.
Turn off and cool nearby AV equipment. Prevent the screen from moving, and keep food, drinks and dirty tools away. Wash and dry hands or use clean gloves appropriate to the task. Prepare a clean, soft, lint-free tool only if the manufacturer permits it.
Use bright, angled room light to see the affected area. Do not judge a stain while an image is projected because image content can hide residue or texture changes.
Inspect before touching. If the issue is loose surface dust, follow the manufacturer-approved dry method with minimal contact. Work gently and avoid grinding particles into the surface.
Do not use high-pressure air, a household vacuum head, stiff brush or aggressive wiping unless the product instructions explicitly allow the equipment and method. Perforations, coatings and tension points can be damaged by concentrated force.
For fingerprints, spots or unknown marks:
Never assume alcohol, glass cleaner, detergent, solvent, bleach, steam or stain remover is safe. Do not mix chemicals. Ask for material-specific guidance.

Support is usually stable, but pressure can still stretch or mark the surface. Keep hands and tools away from frame edges and attachment points.
Do not retract a damp surface. Keep liquid away from the housing, motor, controls and bottom-bar openings. Allow the screen to dry in the approved deployed position.
Directional microstructures can show permanent damage from rubbing or the wrong cleaner. Use only the exact method approved for that material. Review our ALR, CLR and UST screen guide to understand why orientation and surface structure matter.
Avoid pushing contamination into perforations or weave. Confirm whether dry tools, access from the rear or surface removal are permitted. See the acoustic transparent screen guide.
Clean only in a controlled area. Confirm the surface is fully dry before folding, rolling or packing. Check the case for dirt that could transfer back to the fabric.
Control dust at the room and HVAC level, keep fingers away from the image area, and plan work so ladders, paint and construction debris do not pass near the screen. For portable screens, inspect the floor, hands, frame and case before every setup.
Record the material, mark, method and result. That history helps a service team avoid repeating an unsuccessful treatment.
Only if the instructions for the exact material allow it. Some surfaces may tolerate a specified method while others can be permanently marked.
Do not use them unless the screen manufacturer explicitly approves the product and process for that surface.
Stop touching the area and consult the material-specific instructions. Directional structures are sensitive, so generic rubbing can worsen the mark.
Do not retract it while damp. Follow the approved drying position and confirm the surface is completely dry first.
Stop repeated cleaning and contact the supplier with the model, surface name, photos, contaminant history and methods already attempted.
