
A motorized projection screen is only as convenient as its control method. In a small meeting room, a handheld remote may be enough. In an integrated boardroom, the screen usually needs to respond to a wall switch, a control processor or the projector itself—without anyone hunting for a remote.
This guide explains the control methods commonly used with motorized projection screens, what each one requires in wiring and planning, and what to confirm with the factory before ordering. It is written for AV integrators, electrical contractors and project buyers specifying screens for commercial and residential projects.
Control interfaces vary by motor type and order configuration. Treat every method below as a planning direction, and confirm the exact interfaces available for your model at the quotation stage.

The single most common integration failure is not a wrong choice between these methods—it is closing the ceiling before the chosen method's cable is in place.
Many motorized screens are supplied with a handheld remote as a baseline control, but the included transmitter and receiver depend on the ordered configuration.
Remotes are sufficient for standalone rooms. They become a weakness in shared spaces: remotes are lost, batteries fail, and in a classroom or rental meeting room the screen should work for any user without a pairing step.

Where the ordered screen provides a compatible dry-contact interface, contact closure exposes up / stop / down functions as low-voltage control inputs. A control processor or relay module can then operate the screen without relying on a brand-specific remote protocol. This makes dry contact broadly useful in integration projects:
Plan the contact wiring path with the same discipline as the switch cable, and label conductors at both ends. Confirm with the factory whether dry contact requires an interface module for your motor type, and whether the contacts are momentary or maintained—this affects how the control processor must be programmed.

Serial control (commonly RS-485, and RS-232 in some product lines) carries explicit commands rather than contact pulses. Where available on the selected motor and controller, it can suit projects that need addressing, defined commands or status feedback.

For most single-screen meeting rooms, dry contact achieves the same daily result with less engineering. Choose serial control when the wider system design already uses a bus, or when the project specification demands it.

A 12V trigger is a voltage signal, usually from a projector, that tells the screen to lower while present. Dry contact is a voltage-free contact closure operated by a control system. Trigger suits "screen follows projector" automation; dry contact suits control processors and building systems.
Many motor configurations support multiple control methods in parallel, but the available combinations depend on the motor and interface modules. Confirm the exact combination for your model at the quotation stage.
Usually not. A wall switch, dry contact from a control processor, or both will cover typical meeting-room operation. Serial control is worth its engineering cost when the project already runs a control bus or requires feedback and addressing.
Wireless (RF) control can usually be used at any time. Wired methods—switch, trigger, dry contact, serial—depend on cable routes, which are difficult and costly to add after closure. Route control cabling during construction even if the final method is undecided.
