Most projection screen planning assumes one thing: that there is a ceiling or wall available to mount on. In a growing share of real projects, there isn't. Glass-walled meeting rooms, rented offices where drilling is prohibited, heritage interiors, exhibition stands and multi-use halls all need a projection surface that arrives, deploys and leaves no trace.

A floor-rising projection screen answers exactly this case: the housing sits on the floor, and the screen surface rises upward out of it—by motor or by manual lift depending on the model—supported from below rather than hung from above.

    How Floor-Rising Screens Are Built

    A floor-rising screen inverts the usual retractable structure:

    • a weighted floor housing contains the roller and provides the standing base;
    • a lifting mechanism—whose geometry varies by model—raises the top edge and holds the deployed screen upright;
    • drive is motorized on electric models or a gas-assisted/hydraulic manual lift on selected manual models;
    • on tab-tension variants, side tensioning keeps the risen surface flat, which matters because a surface supported only from below is otherwise more exposed to curl than one hung with a weighted bottom bar.

    Because the mechanism supports the surface from below, the lifting and tensioning design deserves close review.     Planning the Room Around a Floor Unit

    A floor-rising screen changes the planning questions. Instead of ceiling structure and recess depth, check:

    1. Floor space and footprint. The housing occupies floor area at the front of the room, deployed and stored. Confirm housing dimensions against the furniture layout—especially in small rooms where the front wall is already tight.
    2. Image height geometry. The image starts above the housing, not at floor level. Check that the resulting image band suits the seating—sightline planning follows the same method as our size and aspect ratio guide.
    3. Power routing. Electric models need power at the housing position: a floor box, a nearby wall outlet or a managed cable route. An extension lead across a walkway is not an acceptable permanent answer.
    4. Projector pairing. The screen position may move; the projector position usually doesn't. If the screen will be repositioned between uses, define the standard position and mark it, or pair the screen with a portable projector on a defined geometry.
    5. Storage and movement. If the unit moves between rooms, confirm weight, handle or wheel provisions, door widths and lift access on the actual route.
    6. Stability environment. Free-standing surfaces respond to airflow more than fixed ones. Avoid placement directly under strong HVAC output or beside doors to windy exteriors.
